People have many different views on the duties of a high school counselor. Some think that they are just there to give out schedules and give preparation for college, but others have realized that they do much more than their job description requires. Many students have received guidance from counselors that they would be unable to receive elsewhere. Others don’t take into consideration the long, hard hours they put in for us without being asked. Whether we have experienced firsthand the graciousness of our counselors or not, we all should be thankful and appreciative of their hard work and dedication.
I have experienced these amazing peoples’ hard work in action and am truly amazed by their impact on students. Many students are in need of support or reassurance and are unable to find that in their homes. This is where our school counselors come into play. They are there for these students who qualify for extra needs that include: clothes, toiletries, free and reduced lunch, bus passes, and anything imaginable. They are also there when we are falling short in our academic standards, to keep us updated on our grades, and give us that extra push to work to the best of our abilities when we need it most. One student in particular was very thankful for her counselor. Freshman Kailie Mckee said, “ Mrs. Delmonico has impacted my life by putting my senior brother and I in the same class.” She also added, “This makes me feel very excited because he is leaving for college this year and I won’t get to see him as much as I do today and I do like to spend quality time with him.”
Counselors are there for any of us who are looking for someone even just to listen to what we have to say. They do not make you feel pressured and are willing to give advice whether it is personal or academic based. They are willing to put us, the student body, before themselves in order to better our futures. They care about us and try their best to help us achieve our goals. Many students have become successful with the dedication of their counselors.
