On March 4, one of the greatest hip hop artists today, Kendrick Lamar, released a compilation album by the name of “Untitled Unmastered.”
“Untitled, Unmastered” contains unfinished demos that were first created during Lamar’s making of his last studio album, “To Pimp a Butterfly.”
“To Pimp a Butterfly,” the Compton native’s third studio album, was a huge success, selling over a million copies and counting, around the world. Released over a year ago, on March 15, 2015, the album was rightfully awarded high praise that included many viewing it as the top album of the year.
The studio album uniquely incorporates the elements of jazz and soul, while Lamar also uses lyrics that speak of the real-life issues of race, depression, and discrimination.
“Untitled, Unmastered” is not just any ordinary album by any means. It continues with the themes of his previous work with its utilization of free jazz and funk, as well as strong social, political and emotional lines.
The album’s release came as a shock to most, however after a few hints from Lamar’s label, Top Dawg Entertainment, and the help of NBA superstar, LeBron James, it would soon be made available on Spotify, then soon after on the iTunes Store.
The album itself is nothing less than exceptional. Lamar proves himself to be a one of a kind artist time and time again with his uncommon lyrics that cover his thoughts on both popular and psychological issues.
It is quite rare to see a rapper of Lamar’s talent today put their voice to use in order to provide commentary on real matters in the world. This is possibly one of the reasons as to why the young rapper has accomplished so much in his little time as an artist.
After being in the unknown making for three years, “Untitled, Unmastered,” certainly displays the high quality of hip hop music that Lamar is capable of producing, while his fans will now be looking forward to the next piece of work that he releases.
